High School Experience

Study at a high school in a new country for a trimester or a year. Make new friends, learn a new language, live with a local family, and become an active global citizen!

Whilst no prior experience in the Thai language is required, you will be placed in a local high school and, for the Thai language programmes, you will study all subjects in Thai. For the Thai/English language programme, you will study some subjects in Thai and some in English.

Uniforms are required and lessons are lecture-style. In addition to the subjects available at the school, you will have Thai language lessons.

Stay with a Host Family

You will be placed with a volunteer Thai host family. Most host families are parents of students at the host schools. AFS Thailand volunteers, who are teachers at the host schools, conduct interviews with the families and inspect their homes to ensure they meet the necessary standards.

Supported by dedicated volunteers and staff, host families help students navigate their new school and community, make friends, learn the language and enjoy their time in Thailand. Sharing culture and traditions helps families bond with students, creating lifelong friendships.

Please note that you will not have contact with your host family until you are in Thailand.

Learn a New Language

Learn how to read and write Thai in your host school!

The official language of Thailand is Thai or Central Thai. It is a member of the Tai-Kadai, a major language family spoken in large parts of Southeast Asia. The Thai alphabet consists of 44 consonant letters, 15 vowel symbols that combine into at least 28 vowel forms, and four tone diacritics.
