The Young Workers Volunteer Program is aimed at young adults who want to clarify career goals and gain intercultural knowledge. People that want to grow personally and gain work experience.

This 12-months program provides you with an easily accessible opportunity for effecting positive societal change through volunteering, while improving your skills and competences for personal, educational, and professional development. Non-formal and formal learning opportunities during the program will enable you to acquire essential competences for personal growth in order to become an Active Global Citizen, thereby improving your employment prospects and facilitating your transition into the labor market.

There are various projects in this program. Some of them are Youth Hostels, which are looking for young, highly motivated team members to play an active part in their organization and to contribute to the daily work routine of the organization.

Projects Description in youth hostels

Youth hostels are hotels which offer their room and services at rather low prices and often accommodate big groups of youth and international groups. It happens that they also host lectures or big events. Volunteers may do the following tasks:

  • reception work and welcoming the guests
  • kitchen work (cleaning or food preparation)
  • reparations and garden tasks
  • caretaker work
  • changing sheets and cleaning of guest rooms
  • They may help in the organization of events for the upcoming season
  • German-beginners are welcome in youth hostels, the more German the volunteer speaks, the more responsibile tasks will be assigned to them.

Volunteers’ report

Julio (2018) writes: “Hi! I am Julio, I live in Lübeck, and I work at the Burgtor youth hostel. My past months with my project were a great experience. Normally, I am supposed to work with the janitor or wash the dishes, but in the past two months, I have worked at the office, with the janitor and in the kitchen, because I have learned German at school and I have made improvements in my project. I think that this situation is really interesting, because I am not sure that I can work in the office or in the kitchen. However, my colleagues told me that I was a great worker, that I am really motivated. And when you have such a motivation, it is so easier to work. I think it is wonderful.”
