This country stretches from flat farming country in the north to rolling hills in the centre to the Alps in the south. Germans enjoy a high standard of living, are famous for their precision, and highly value punctuality. You will always find someone debating politics, culture, environmental issues or sports.

Germany offers an active youth culture, and a wide range of activities to choose from. Top sports: especially soccer, hiking and bicycling.

Accommodation

Most projects are in larger cities or in the metropolitan catchment area of larger cities.
Some organisations arrange for accommodation. You will then either live within the
project, having your own room in a shared apartment or in an external student
dormitory. Other projects do not provide the possibility of accommodation. You will
then be responsible for finding your own accommodation. Young people are
encouraged to care of their own affairs. Be prepared for the chance to live a bit more
independently than in other countries.

The Projects

The projects within the Young Workers Volunteer Program are aimed at young adults
who want to clarify career goals and gain intercultural knowledge. It will be a 12
months full-time engagement. The projects involved are e.g. NGOs and international
charities that look for young, highly motivated team members to play an active part in
their organisation and to contribute to the daily work routine of the organization. You
will have the chance to improve your skills and competences for personal, educational,
and professional development, as well as facilitate your employability and transition
into the labour market.

Language

German is the official language of Germany. Organisations prefer participants who
already have a good understanding of the German language (A2 or higher). The
working language in the projects is primarily German. Working language during AFS
seminars is German and English.

During your first month in Germany you will have a 100 teaching units German as a
foreign language in a language academy in Hamburg together with other international AFS volunteers. After that you will start your volunteering experience in your project.

Food

German cuisine is often rich, and differs depending on the region. Red meat, poultry,
or fish served with potatoes, dumplings, noodles or rice, and vegetables are popular.
Some projects dispose of their own cafeteria and will invite you to eat there. Most of
the time they offer breakfast and/or lunch. Other projects do not have their own
cafeteria, in this case you are responsible for arranging your food. You will find the
details regarding the food for each project below.
